Interview: Young Live

Over the past year you simply can’t have missed the name Young Live. Filthy dubstep remixes high up the Hypem-charts, productions for Kreayshawn & The White Girl Mob and now the large “Every Day Is My Birthday”-project. But who is this dude with the Birthday boy-steez?
I think the first time I featured the Chicago native Young Live, or Jeremy Davis as his real name is, was sometime early in 2010 with some amazing dubstep flavoured remixes of some of my favourite ladies Sky Ferreira and M.I.A. But long before then Young Live was that annoying type of boy I hated growing up. You know, every class had at least one of them, that always was beating on desks in class (that drove me and my level of concentration mad) which led to doing it at lunch and after school, but in Young Live’s case all that noise accumulated into something good, it led to the question ‘Why don’t you make beats?’, and since then a lot has happened.
Yes, on the back of his own “Cobra” release on Ill Pill Records that dropped last summer (buy here), production credits for Kreayshawn and V-Nasty (White Girl Mob) featured on Kreayshawn’s “Kittys x Choppas” (get it here) and a slew of free releases such as his “Famous Friends”-EP Young Live got plenty more in store for the future up his sleeve.
From what I understand you just signed with Box of Milk/Universal for a 3 single deal?
- I’m with the box. We are still getting some paperwork sorted and signed but it’s definitely going. They have a couple of the songs locked from me. Takes a little more since I handle my own business aspect of my career also. When the singles are ready to be pushed I’ll have a box homie handling that but I’ll still have my hand in it, I’ll always have good view and input on my career path.
Yesterday, the 21st of August “Happy Birthday” landed, the first out of four projects leading up to “Every Day Is My Birthday” in November and I just have to ask, is there any plans on a whole album?
- At this point there aren’t even talks of a whole album. I like it that way, how I think. If you look TOO far down the path you will trip up from not seeing what’s in front of you…
For those who’s gotten acquainted with Young Live through his remixes/productions and thought producing was the only thing he had to bring to the table I must you’re wrong. Growing up inspired by the contemporary storytelling by 2 Pac and Nas he also got some good rap game on and “Happy Birthday” is proper good hip hop.
Tell me more about “Happy Birthday” such as features and producers? Which roll do you play? Rapper? Producer? Both?
- “Happy Birthday” is the first installment of the “Every Day is My Birthday”-project, it’s 3 trap rap tracks with big beats and real raps. Not gun shit or things I’m not doing though, an east coast vibe track, a smoke break track, a trap song over a lighter beat and two introductory promo videos. Later installments will have the will feature tracks with some pretty big names. Trouble Andrew, Auburn, Kesha, Rob Threezy, Lex Luger, Adam Tensta, Vyle, Kreayshawn to name a couple… It’s my first backed solo vocal project and features some close people on my team. Produced by me, Traplife Musik, G Money, Lemi Vice and Chemist, engineered by Sammy K, voiced by me… Happy birthday, lets tear shit up!
Which is your favourite song off the release and why?
- ‘Bitches on My Floor‘. It’s 100% real, and ‘Light That Up’. It’s a smoke break in the middle.

What do you enjoy the most? Rapping or producing?
- I enjoy creating. With the progression of my career I have yet to make a rap track that I originally produced and have put out. I produced ‘Everybody Knows’ but its made of a sample. at the point of when I was focusing on my dubstep career more, I was enjoying producing more… Now I suppose I’d say I enjoy or prefer rapping more…
One more thing… Big thanks to First Up! all my supporters, ‘GO-squad, Cobra Corps and everybody else who’s with me… Birthday Boy-steez. Bless!
