2011 XXL Freshman Cover

Yet again, XXL’s 4th annual Freshman Cover features only men. Seriously. How can a respectable magazine act this way? That’s bad journalism, plain and simple. Can we please raise the bar in urban media over all? At least try not to be stuck in ancient time. The editor in chief of XXL is a woman, Vanessa Satten. If I was Vanessa or the publisher Dennis Page I would be ashamed.

The 2011 edition features: Big K.R.I.T., Cyhi Da Prynce, Diggy Simmons, Fred The Godson, Kendrick Lamar, Lil B, Lil Twist, Mac Miller, Meek Mill, Yelawolf, YG. Peep the cover below:

   Dear Alex Drake,Yes, the hip hop scene is a perfect display of the western world in general, male dominated and patriarchal structured.We all know that, but I don't buy in to that lame concept. I'm not gonna discuss female empowerment and liberation as I think that discussion leads nowhere, as we pretty much discuss the same things that was on topic back in 1968. There are PLENTY of female rappers that could have made that cover, and not to know about them is bad journalism. Okay if it's some poor copy/paste blog runned by some pre-teen male that only mentions Wiz, Lil B, CyHi etc. FINE. I couldn't expect more. But for a respectable magazine?! With real journalists? HELL NO.I don't have to make suggestions, I think it's quite easy to just flick through my archive to find a good bunch. I think the urban media in general needs a concious raising over all. I'm dead tired of reading poor texts by men who only writes for other men for example. We need more perspectives, more angles, that not steams from a white male from the western world's perspective. Get me?

   I'm certainly not in agreement with every choice on the list, but if you complain about there being no grils, then you could atleast suggest some female rappers who should have made the list.As far as I'm concerned, it's not sexist but merely a representation of a male dominated arena..
